Bulgaria could add up to 42 GW of wind energy outside protected areas
The slow adoption of wind energy in Bulgaria is due to governance shortcomings, including regulatory changes, technical and administrative bottlenecks, opposition from local communities, and a lack of political commitment. Wind-rich areas in Bulgaria have limited grid capacity, hindering the development of wind energy projects. The northeastern part of Bulgaria has the potential to add 3.8 GW to 4.2 GW of wind energy capacity by 2030 and another 5 GW by 2040, producing a significant amount of electricity. Bulgaria has a potential offshore wind capacity of 176 GW, mostly located in the northeast, and should cooperate with neighboring countries for wind power sector development. The policy brief provides an overview of a study on wind energy potential in Bulgaria and highlights the necessary policy actions to ensure power supply security and environmental protection.
