Targets for Renewable Energy

The promotion of renewable energy sources (RES) is a high European Union (EU) priority for several reasons, including the security and diversification of energy supply, environmental protection and social and economic cohesion.

The framework for the contribution of renewables was set out in the Directive 2009/28/EC from 23 April 2009 replacing Directive 2001/77/EC. The Directive specifies national renewable energy targets for each EU country, taking into account the overall potential for renewables. EU countries set out how they plan to meet these targets in their national renewable energy action plans.

During their preparation phase for EU accession some CEE countries who are not yet a member state of the EU prepare action plans for renewable energy. They are supported in this action by the Energy Community.

The table below shows for the EU-countries among the CEE-countries for the year 2005 the share of renewables in final energy consumption together with the corresponding NREAP-value. The table also shows the target value and the corresponding NREAP-value for the year 2020.

The indicative trajectory values are calculated according to Annex I Part B of the directive.

Which target in which country?

In line with the Energy Strategy until 2030, renewables are expected to account for 27% of energy consumption.

Further targets for 2030 are a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels and at least 27% energy savings compared with the business-as usual scenario.
