Lithuania looks to synchronize its power grid with Western Europe

Lithuania is focusing on synchronizing its power grid to the rest of Continental/Western Europe.

Lithuania is focusing on synchronizing its power grid to the rest of Continental/Western Europe. Having not reached a consensus with Estonia and Latvia on this issue, Lithuania may consider carrying out the project without the involvement of its Baltic neighbors.

The step comes most likely in response to Russia’s preparations for disconnecting the Baltic power grids from its BRELL ring and according to political sources, Lithuania fears being potentially cut off from this grid in several years’ time and is therefore looking for a “Plan B”.

However, Lithuanian transmission system operator Litgrid stated that this scenario has not yet been analyzed internally and if a political decision will be made on this matter, the company will look into whether this option would be technically possible.
