Closing of coal mines in the Czech Republic

The drop in coal prices puts the operation of coal mines at risk

The Czech government intends to gradually close hard coal mines with the aim to close the last coal mines in eastern Czech Republic by 2022.
The reason for the closing is the sharp drop in global coal prices. OKD, the largest coal mining group of the Czech Republic announced that it needs additional financing in order to continue operation of its four mines. With the closing of the mines thousands of jobs are at risk.
