New law tries to promote renewable energy in Poland

In a mild attempt to support its renewable energy sector Poland is introducing feed-in tariffs for micro-installations

The new law will become effective as from 1 January 2016; it was adopted in February and signed into law by the President on 11 March 2015.

In the future operators of wind, photovoltaic or hydro plants with an installed capacity up to 3 kW will receive a feed-in tariff of approximately 0,18 EUR/kWh, whereas for plants with an installed capacity between 3 und 10 kW a feed-in tariff of approximately 0,16/kWh EUR will be applied.

Plants for biomass energy production will be compensated with 0,17 EUR/kWh, landfill gas with 0,13 EUR/kWh and gas from purification plants with 0,11 EUR/kWh. The feed-in tariffs shall be applied for 15 years.

However, large scale installations representing the big majority will have to participate in an auction system, whose winner will be chosen on the basis of a procedure consisting of two phases: prequalification and the auction itself.

The installed capacity to be supported by the new scheme is limited to 800 MW, 300 MW  for installations up to 3 kW and 500 MW for installations between 3 and 10 kW.

Installations supported by the new scheme may receive support for 15 years, the support system is foreseen to end by 31 December 2035.
