Lithuania to import LNG from the US

In order to reduce their dependence on Russian gas the Baltic States and Poland signed an agreement with the United States

A non-binding agreement with the US was signed by Litgas, the Lithuanian liquified natural gas (LNG) importer. Poland is expected to follow. A floating import terminal was opened by Lithuania in 2014, another one is likely to be opened by Poland later in 2015. Litgas signed an accord with Norway's Statoil to purchase 0.54 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year through Lithuania's floating LNG import terminal. Litgas has a further 16 non-binding deals with firms providing approximately half the world's LNG. Russia's Gazprom was the unique gas supplier to the Baltic States until the end of 2014, and Poland obtains almost half of its gas from Russia.
