Lithuania and Sweden start building NordBalt power interconnection

The first power cables have been laid at the shores of the Baltic sea, initiating the construction of the 450 km-long NordBalt power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden. The NordBalt project will have a capacity of 700 MW (300 kV), and would cost about LTL 1.9bn (€550m, €131m of which will be funded by the EU).

Construction works should be completed by late 2015/early 2016. This interconnection will accelerate the integration of Baltic countries into European markets, as well as into Nordpool. Electricity imports from Sweden are expected to triple.
