Gazprom starts building South Stream gas pipeline in Serbia

Construction of the South Stream gas pipeline has started in Serbia, with the welding of the first joint of the Serbian section in Sajkas. South Stream will run in Serbia from Zajecar at the border of Serbia and Bulgaria to Backi Breg that borders Hungary (422 km).

Gas branches from the main pipeline will be laid to Croatia (51 km) and Republika Srpska, in Bosnia-Herzegovina (109 km). Set up in November 2009 by Gazprom (51%) and Srbijagas (49%), South Stream Serbia joint project company is responsible for the construction and subsequent operation of South Stream in Serbia.
As part of the project, Gazprom and Srbijagas signed a long-term agreement for the delivery of up to 1.5 bcm/year of gas over 10 years (via the existing route and via the South Stream when operation); in November 2011, the 450 mcm Banatski Dvor gas storage was commissioned.
