The Opole 1.8 GW coal-fired project could be revived

The Polish government has pushed the largest power utility in Poland, PGE, to revive the Opole coal-fired power project, due to expected power shortages from 2017. Alstom would coordinate the project, taking over some work from local companies.

In April 2013, PGE had scrapped the project, which aims at installing two 900 MW (800 MW net) coal-fired units in Opole, citing changes on the energy market and in the macroeconomic environment, namely falling electricity prices and weaker demand. Moreover, earlier in 2013, the EU commission had limited the allowance of free CO2 quotas for fossil-fuel power plants and projects in Poland. The project was expected to be commissioned in 2017 and 2018.
