Russia and Macedonia sign South Stream construction deal

Russia and Macedonia have signed a bilateral agreement for the construction of a South Stream gas pipeline branch to Macedonia. Gazprom will decide later whether the Macedonian stretch of the pipeline will come from neighboring Serbia or Bulgaria.

Macedonia has been supplied with Russian gas since 1997; negotiations on the possible extension of the South Stream gas pipeline to Macedonia started in June 2010. The South Stream pipeline will deliver up to 63 bcm/year of gas from Russia to Bulgaria (offshore section in the Black Sea), Serbia (branches to Bosnia and Croatia), Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. The first gas supplies are scheduled for late 2015.
