Montenegro intends to apply for funding from the European Union's Growth Plan

Montenegro plans to apply for funding from the European Union's Western Balkans Growth Plan to invest in hydropower projects and modernization of transmission and distribution networks.

The European Commission launched the growth plan for the Western Balkans in November. It aims to make some of the benefits of membership available to the region before their accession in terms of accelerating economic growth and socio-economic convergence. However, the beneficiary countries must fulfill certain conditions in order to receive EUR 2 billion in grants and EUR 4 billion in concessional loans.

Montenegro plans to use the funding to accelerate the construction of hydropower plants and enhance transmission systems to enable the integration of renewable energy sources and provide greater energy security.
