Albania starts building first power link to N. Macedonia

Albania has started the construction of the first electricity link between Albania and North Macedonia - a 400 kV power line connecting the central city of Elbasan with Bitola in southwestern North Macedonia.

The power line should strengthen energy security and be integrated into the broader Balkan regional electricity market. In Albania, the project costs should reach 70 million euros (76.5 million dollars), of which 14 million euros will be provided by the European Union. The German government is granting a loan of 50.5 million euros for the project. The construction of the power line in North Macedonian is estimated at 50 million euros. North Macedonia has already started to build the power grid in February 2022.

The project is a part of a larger initiative of the European Commission for establishing an East-West electricity transmission corridor between Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Italy. The section between Bulgaria and North Macedonia has already been finalized. A 400 kV connection between Albania and Montenegro and a submarine cable connection between Montenegro and Italy are already in operation.
