The potential for biomethane production in Ukraine
Currently, this is mainly biodiesel and first-generation bioethanol. In the future, the market for biofuels for transport should expand and therefore also the production possibilities for second-generation biofuels (advanced biofuels).Today, there are 22 small bioethanol plants in Ukraine, which are producing more than 380,000 tons of biofuel per year. The total potential of biogas production in Ukraine is currently 8.16 million tons/year and a quarter of this amount can be used for transport purposes. By 2050, the production potential of biogas as a fuel could increase up to 4.7 million tons per year. Ukraine has the largest agricultural area in Europe and therefore one of the best potentials for biomethane production in the world. The potential for biomethane production in Ukraine is 21.8 billion m3/year.
