A former Polish coal mine is being converted into a 200 MW solar power plant

The new 200 MW solar PV plant is now generating energy on a former brown open pit lignite site.

EDP Renewables has completed construction on a 200 MW solar farm in Poland, which is an example of energy transition and the transformation of post-industrial areas. The PV plant is located on fields that were once part of a lignite mine and benefits from high solar irradiation and consistent winds, ensuring efficient utilization of the installed capacity. The Przykona solar installation has made the region a leading center for renewable energy production in Poland, with a cumulative solar power capacity of over 280 MW. Construction on the project started in September 2022 and the first energy generation took place in June 2023. The project was financed through corporate financing and a 15-year Contract-for-Difference (CfD) was obtained, with the option to opt out for a more profitable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
