Bulgaria on Feb. 1, 2023, began construction of a long-awaited gas pipeline to Serbia that will allow the flow of non-Russian gas to Belgrade and increase security of supply in south eastern Europe. The 170-km pipeline is expected to run from the Bulgarian town of Novi Iskar to Nis in Serbia and is expected to be operational by the end of the year. The project is funded by the European Union, will allow Serbia to access non-Russian sources from the Southern Gas Corridor, and liquefied natural gas terminals in Greece and Turkey. The pipeline will allow gas to flow in both directions and diversify the routes connecting Bulgaria to the European gas network.
