Wester Balkan Countries: Discuss possibilities of energy communities

Energy communities, where citizens, businesses, and local governments work together to produce energy for self-consumption and also sell it, is a solution for the Western Balkans to speed up decarbonization and make the energy transition sustainable. Governments should create a legal framework to enable energy communities to be established and then allow local actors, primarily local governments, to manage them.

The Western Balkans can accelerate their decarbonization and make the energy transition sustainable by implementing energy communities, where citizens, businesses, and local governments work together to produce energy for self-consumption and also sell it. The current energy crisis and rising energy prices make energy communities an even more viable solution, as they also provide energy security for consumers in the form of a steady supply at affordable prices. Governments should establish a legal framework to enable the creation of energy communities and then allow local actors, primarily local governments, to manage them, according to speakers at the Citizen Energy Communities/Renewable Energy Communities conference held in Sarajevo. These ideas were supported by the more than 80 participants present at the event.
