Commission approves € 150 million Romanian support scheme

The European Commission approved the €150 million Romanian support scheme to build and upgrade district heating systems, plants and networks based exclusively on renewable energy sources. Projects that will switch from fossil fuels to green energy will be eligible for funds.

The decision aims to support the investments in the district heating generation installations (up to 60 MW of heat equivalent) and enable switching from fossil fuel energy production (coal, natural gas) to heat production from renewable energy sources (such as biogas, biomass and geothermal heat) .

The projects must meet the efficient district heating set out in the Energy Efficency Directive. In this case, Romania uses the flexibility introduced by the European Green Deal's Investment Plan to design the support for the construction and modernisation investments in district heating generation.
