The EU opens accession negotigations with North Macedonia and Albania

On 24th March 2020, the European Union opened accession negotiations with the North Macedonia and Albania. In addition, Albania have to fulfill additional conditions before it is considered ready for each of those steps.

The European Commission will publish the framework for negotiations in the course of the next intergovernmental conference.

Mr. Olivér Várhelyi, the Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement expects that the talks with North Macedonia will start in June the earliest, depending on the progess.

The talks with the two candidate countries are expected to last for many years and offer no guarantee of eventual membership.
