Slovenia has ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2002 and committed herself to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 8% compared to the base year level of 1986

Air pollution

The limit on negative environmental impacts from energy use imposed by the Environmental Protection Act of 1993 is temporarily severed for economic and social reasons. The greatest polluter in terms of NOx emissions is the transport sector (68%), electricity production contributes some 27% of NOx emissions. Its share in CO2 emissions amounts to 47%, followed only by transport (26%). Based on figures from the year 1993, the greatest share (81%) in SO2 emissions was from electricity generation (mostly from the Sostanj thermal power plant).
