Production
Slovenské elektrárne, a.s.
Dominant generator Slovenské elektrárne, a.s. (www.seas.sk) (Slovak Electric, plc. abbr. SE, a.s.), makes up for 85% of Slovakia's annual electricity production, operating two nuclear plants, two coal fired plants and 34 hydro plants. Present installed capacity of SE, a.s. is 5,997 MW, of which:
NPP (Nuclear Power Plant): 2,200 MW,
TPP (Thermal Power Plant): 1,398 MW,
HPP (Hydro Power Plant): 2,399 MW.
SE is responsible also for the trade and sale of electricity. Another activity is heat generation and delivery of heat energy to regional suppliers. The remaining 15% of generation rests with two of three regional distribution utilities and other IPPs serving industrial customers. Law to sell any remaining power to the grid privileges the latter. SE is also responsible for the whole electricity grid.
The joint-stock company Slovenské elektrárne had its inception 21 Janaury 2002 as a new entity from property substance and a successor in title to Slovenské elektrárne, a.s., from which Prenosová sústava and Tepláren Košice separated as of the above date.

Distribution
Three regional distribution utilities covering the whole territory of the Slovak Republic take care of the distribution of electricity to end customers. As of July 1, 2007 unbundling took place on the electricity market, i.e. electricity distribution was separated from its sale (delivery).
- Zapadoslovenská distribúcia, a.s. provides electricity distribution within the Bratislava, Nitra, and Trnava region.
- Stredoslovenská energetika – distribúcia, a.s.provides electricity distribution within the area of the Banská Bystrica, Trencín, and Žilina region.
- Východoslovenská distribucná, a.s. provides electricity distribution within the area of the Košice, Prešov, and a part of the Banská Bystrica region.
Transmission
Slovenska elektrizacna prenosova sustava, a.s. (Slovak electricity transmission system, Plc.) was registered as an independent legal entity on 21 January 2002 and acts as the transmission system operator in the Slovak Republic. The mission of the Company is to operate the transmission system reliably, ensure dispatching control of the system, its maintenance and development so that to guarantee reliable and quality electricity supply, and parallel operation with neighbouring systems in line with UCTE recommendations while respecting non-discriminating and transparent principle approaches to the grids with minimum environmental impacts.
Oil and gas market
Oil
Nafta Gbely is the oil and natural gas producer. It is also responsible of the storage of natural gas, the most profitable activity (capacity of 2.5 million m3). After the government sold and purchased its shares, the public company SPP, Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel, and Westfälische Ferngas (WFG), a subsidiary company of RWE, finally purchased 55.9% and 40% of Naphta Gbely respectively.

Transpetrol is in charge of the oil transport. The State, who owned 100% of the company, sold 49% of its shares to the Russian company Yuko for 74 M US $ in December 2001.

Slovnaft, a private company, operates the only refinery of the country. The share of the State in Slovnaft was strongly reduced: 80% in 1993 to 7% at the end of 1995. In May 2000, the Hungarian company Mol purchased 36.2% of Slovnaft and thus has became the most important foreign investor of the company. Slovnaft represents the largest stock exchange capitalisation of the country.

Several companies are present in the distribution of oil products including a national company, Benzinol (the former monopoly). In 1995, 51% of the shares of Benzinol were acquired by Slovnaft.
The second largest oil distribution company is OMV, followed by shell.

Petrochema Dubová – private joint stock company, which provides for refinery processing of the crude oil extracted in the Slovak Republik. Among its principal activities are the purchasing of local crude oil and/or of the crude oil extracted in the Czech Republic, oil processing, distribution and storage of oil products, retail and wholesale activities in the Slovak Republik, and export of products.

Gas
The public company SPP, Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel dealt with imports, transport and distribution of natural gas. As of July 2006 SPP has legally unbundled the transmission activities and distribution activities. In addition to the parent company SPP, a. s.: 100% subsidiaries SPP - preprava, a.s. and SPP - distribúcia, a.s. have also started operating on the market.
The main source of income for the company comes from transport fees on Russian gas. The State sold 49% of ist shares in March 2002 for about 3,100 million € to a consortium associating GDF, Ruhrgas and Gasprom. The gas storage is ensured by Nafta Gbely.
Coal and lignit market
A private import-export company, Banska a.s. and three state production companies (Bana Zahorie sp, BD Velky sp and HN Prievidza sp) operate in the coal sector. The mining companies directly sell what they produce or sell it via Banska.
