Romania and Bulgaria to build new hydropower plants on the Danube River

Romania has positive signals from European institutions and Danube River countries on a planned joint venture with Bulgaria for the construction of new hydroelectricity power plants. This was announced by the operations director of Romania's state-owned electricity utility Hidroelectrica, Dragoş Zachia.

“We have already had conversations with Bulgaria regarding the development of a number of projects on Iron Gate 2 ("Porţile de Fier" in Romanian), namely Turnu Măgurele, Măcin and Silistra-Călăraşi,” Zachia stated in late November 2009. In addition to these projects, Hidroelectrica will invest in upgrades to older plants as well as new ones aimed at electricity production. He added between 2009 and 2012 Hidroelectrica planned to invest 560 million Euros and raise electricity production by 1 TWh annually.
