Macedonian Ministry of Economy and Mali Hidroelektrani sign agreements for 7 small HPPs

Agreements for the construction of small hydroelectric power plants were signed between the Macedonian Ministry of Economy and the Skopje-based company Mali Hidroelektrani at the end of November 2009 in Skopje.

These agreements were signed for 7 of the sites out of the 14 that were granted to Mali Hidroelektrani in a tender dating 14 February 2007, in which river waters for electricity production from 60 small HPPs were granted under concession, the Ministry of Economy stated. The seven new small HPPs should be operational within three years' time following the granting of their concession. Their overall capacity is 5.454 MW, with an annual production of electricity of 23.151GWh.
At the moment, the fourth international public announcement for the construction of about 38 small hydropower plants in Macedonia is in the phase of preparation. The first three international calls for small HPPs came in the period 2006-2008.
According to the Ministry of Economy, every six months it will release public announcements for giving under concession waters for the production of electricity from small HPPs. This is in accordance with the Macedonian governmental programme for the construction of about 400 small HPPs, each with a power capacity of up to 5 MW, for total electrical power of about 250 MW, and expected annual production of electricity of about 1200GWh.
