Energy Supply

National resources

The two main energy sources in Latvia are hydro and bioenergy sources. These two cover some 35-40% of Latvia's primary energy demand. Latvia has only limited domestic energy resources. Several studies have estimated that Latvia has a total offshore reserve of 300 million barrels of oil in the Latvian areas of the Baltic Sea. The Latvian Development Agency has published a more optimistic estimate of 733 million barrels. Latvia has approximately 400 Mt (4,605 PJ) of peat, 40% of which can be used as fuel. More than 50% of the country is covered by forest.[Latvian Bioenergy Association]

The trend of steadily rising primary energy demand, which is visible in the EU and Austria, can up to now only be seen in Slovenia, and, covertly, in Hungary and Slovak Republic. However, data from 2000 - 2003 show a similiar trend also for Latvia:

How do I read this table?

Example: 240 TJ of solid fuels were produced in the country in 2009, additional 3,330 TJ were imported. 194 TJ were exported. 113 went from the stock. The remaining 3,263 TJ went into primary consumption, of which 149 TJ went into own use. Of the remaining 3,108 industry consumed 1,685, households 1,423 TJ.
