Energy Supply

National resources

Estonia has very few conventional resources.  However, it has important reserves of oil shales: 4 Gt (2010), therefore accounting for approximately 70% of the world’s oil shale production. Estonia has also large areas of peat land - peat reserves are approximated at 2 Gt. 54% of the country are covered by forests, and thus Estonia also has important reserves of wood.

The trend of steadily rising primary energy demand, which is visible in the EU and Austria, can, in the countries shown in the figure, up to now only be seen in Slovenia, and, covertly, in Hungary and Slovak Republic.

How do I read this table?

Example: 138,098 TJ of solid fuels were produced in the country in 2009, additional 1,233 TJ were imported. 2,881 TJ were exported, 10,115 went to the stock. The remaining 126,335 TJ went into primary consumption, of which 88,854 into power plants for electricity production. Of the remaining 5,454 TJ industry consumed 4,689 and households 694.
