Energy Supply
National resources
Estonia has very few conventional resources. However, it has important reserves of oil shales: 3.8 Gt, therefore accounting for 70% of the world’s oil shale production. Estonia has also large areas of peat land (10,000 sq km, or 900 Mt (US DoE FE) - 2 Gt (Enerdata) of peat). 46% of the country are covered with forest. [ Enerdata, US DoE FE, US DoE EIA ]
Primary Energy Demand of Estonia, 2007
Primary Energy Demands per Capita in Estonia, as compared to other Countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Austria and the current European Union 15, 2006
Development of Primary Energy Demand per Capita in Estonia, as compared to the other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, the European Union 15 and Austria, 2006
The trend of steadily rising primary energy demand, which is visible in the EU and Austria, can, in the countries shown in the figure, up to now only be seen in Slovenia, and, covertly, in Hungary and Slovak Republic.

How do I read this table?
Example: 140,216 TJ of solid fuels were produced in the country in 2007, additional 4,273 TJ were imported. 2,729 TJ were exported, 3,450 went to the stock. The remaining 138,308 TJ went into primary consumption, of which 116,072 into power plants for electricity production. Of the remaining 4,001 TJ industry consumed 2,896 and households 1,046.
