Energy policy
The main issue of the government is to secure a sufficient and regular fuel supply, which means improvement of the economic situation and increased use of domestic energy sources.
Strategic Objectives are: security of supplies, efficiency, financing investments, environmental protection.
In the 2002 Regular Report on Estonia’s progress towards accession to the European Union, the European Commission comes to the conclusion, that in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy no progress can be reported. Regarding energy efficiency, the remaining secondary legislation implementing EC standards is needed. Secondary legislation under the Energy Efficiency of Equipment Act 81 on requirements for hot water boilers, household lamps, and ballasts for fluorescent lighting is being prepared. In addition, the planned establishment of an energy agency will be an important step to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy resources. Further efforts are also required to enhance the use of renewable energy resources and implement EU policy in this respect.
Long-term Public Fuel and Energy Sector Development Plan until 2015
The Plan is based on the Sustainable Development Act and is the major strategy document directing the development of the Estonian fuel and energy sector until 2015. The strategic objectives of the Estonian fuel and Energy sector include.
