National Resources
Bosnia and Herzegovina has substantial sources of coal and hydropower resources.
The proven brown coal reserves in amount of 2.4 billion tons and proven lignite reserves amount to 3.2 billion tons. Proved oil reserves amount to approximately 50 million tons.
The potential of hydropower in BiH is estimated at approximately 5,555 MW or 21,840 GWh/yr and currently only 50% is already utilized. The potential for small-scale hydropower plants is put at 1,005 MW or 3,519 GWh/yr.
The total technical potential of biomass is 33.52 PJ/yr is based on the following resources: 20,000,000 m³ biogas, 211,257 tons waste from fruit-growind and vineyards, 634,000 tons waste from crops, 3.858 tons waste from oilseed, 1,142,698 m³ residues from wood-processing industries, 1,466,973 m³ firewood, 599,728 m³ forest biomass.
The theoretical potentials of solar energy for the whole Bosnian area are approximated at 67 PWh assuming that on daily basis every square kilometer of horizontal area receive 3.6 kWh from irradiation.
BiH has a geothermal potential of 33 MWth. At the moment 16 macro locations have been identified as suitable for wind farm development with estimated capacity of 950 MWel or 1,950 GWh/yr. Energy potential of waste oil is 0.8 PJ (20,000 tons) while old tyres are 0.4 PJ (14,000 tons).
