Bosnia and Herzegovina has substantial sources of lignite and hydroelectric resources.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has proven brown coal reserves in amount of 2.15 billion tons proven lignite reserves in amount of 3.7 billion tons. Proved oil reserves amount to approximately 50 million tons. The theoretical potential of hydropower in Bosnia and Herzegovina is estimated at approximately 8 000 MW, the technical potential at 6 000 MW and the economic potential 5 600 MW. The potential for small-scale hydropower plants is put at 2 500 GWh/yr. 53% of total land area is covered with forest, so the potentials to produce energy from biomass are approx. 1 million m³/yr. Theoretical potentials of solar energy for the whole Bosnian area is approximated at 74.65 PWh. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a geothermal potential of 33 MWth. According to research in 2007, there is a significant wind energy potential.
