Construction of 12 hydropower plants along the Varda river in Macedonia

The Macedonian government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE) and the Chinese Development Bank (CDB).

The subject of the MoU is the Vardar Valley hydropower project. The project first of all foresees the development of a feasibility study for the construction of 12 hydropower plants within the next 12 – 18 months. The hydropower plants will be located along the river Vardar approaching the Greek boarder. The project will be funded by the government (15 %) and CDB (85 %), total costs will amount to € 1.5 B. It is scheduled to be completed in the next 12 to 15 years.
