Energy Supply

Natural Resources

Albania has a large hydro power potential, estimated at 3000 MW (corresponding to an hydropower production of 17 TWh, about 3 times the present level). It has limited oil reserves (27 Mt). It has significant lignite reserves (794 Mt), although its sulphur content is high (over 3%) and it is only slightly developed (2010).

The decline of energy demand per capita is mainly due to the reduction of energy demand in industry. The trend of steadily rising primary energy demand, which is visible in the EU and Austria, can up to now only be seen in Slovenia, and, covertly, in Hungary and Slovak Republic.

Primary Energy Sources

Since 1990 there have been major structural changes as regards the shares of energy sources on the supply side. Domestically produced coal and gas have been the "big losers" since the economic turmoil caused many industrial consumers to shut down.

In 2008, Albania's total primary energy supply reached 2.48 Mtoe, or almost 90% of its 1990 level, although the TPES structure changed dramatically during this period. Domestic production, mostly crude oil and hydropower, now accounts for roughly 50% of TPES compared to 90% in 1990. Oil products, electricity and fuelwood collectively account for 98% of TPES, having replaced coal and natural gas as the country's dominant fuels.

Albania trades electricity, either importing or exporting, depending on rainfall and overall hydrology. Fuelwood is also exported, but not officially reported. Albania imports more than 70% of its oil product needs.

How to read this table

Example: 1115,22 TJ of solid fuels were produced in the country in 2009, additional 124,98 TJ were imported. The remaining 1240,21 TJ went into final consumption. 645,43 TJ were consumed by the industry and 594,77 TJ were consumed by households and services.
